La Comunità italiana di Bedford indossa i suoi migliori vestiti della domenica.
Subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, l’esodo degli italiani all’estero riguardava molto la contea inglese del Bedfordshire: l’edilizia era affamata di braccia da lavoro come gli italiani erano desiderosi di sfuggire alla povertà del dopoguerra. Molti avevano mandato soldi a casa prima di farsi raggiungere dalle loro famiglie una volta che le loro condizioni economiche erano migliorate; oggi la grande comunità italiana (oltre 20.000 famiglie) non ha dimenticato le sue radici. La maggior parte degli italiani all’estero acquista auto italiane e hanno a cuore i loro classici modelli col tricolore. Eppure vi è un solo luogo che organizza eventi classici e legati alle supercar nella zona del Bedfordshire e non è un caso che il polo di tutto questo sia lo Sharnbrook Hotel (che ha anche un noto ristorante, il Vesuvio).
Lamborghini come se piovesse… Lamborghini everywhere at Supercar Sunday…
Il Supercar Sunday svoltosi domenica scorsa allo Sharnbrook (è un paio di miglia fuori di Bedford, a nord di Londra) è l’ultimo evento: la prima mostra (Bedfordshire Italian Car & Bike Day) è stata organizzata nel 2007 e si è rivelato un vero successo anche se era una cosa per pochi intimi. Entro il 2010 era cresciuto diventando un evento annuale molto ben frequentato; l’anno dopo, altri due meeting sono stati aggiunti al calendario annuale e lo Sharnbrook Hotel ha aperto le sue porte a tutte le auto d’epoca e ad auto e veicoli di interesse moderni.
Il Supercar Sunday, però, ha solo tre anni di vita ed è cresciuto in modo esponenziale: da Lamborghini a Maserati, Ferrari e McLaren, l’area di visualizzazione è stato un trionfo di linee scolpite, scarichi quadrupli e lucenti motori V8 e V12 (con qualche occasionale V10).
Lo Sharnbrook’s management non è contrario ad accettare iscrizioni da rivenditori nazionali e specialisti che contribuiscano a dare ulteriore grinta all’evento, e le ultime Lamborghini Aventador (una SuperVeloce e una Roadster) sono state parcheggiate all’ingresso ad accogliere i visitatori. Tra di loro, una Countach che è un modello fra i più amati dalla stampa britannica e dava un tono molto regale all’evento, ricordando lo stile inimitabile di molte Lamborghini.
Una combinazione infinita di vernici su misura, dettagli e auto da sogno hanno punteggiato la collina vicino alla zona di intrattenimento delle famiglie, impegnate ad ammirare le nuove Huracán e le classiche Diablo. Nello spazio rimanente intorno all’hotel facevano bella mostra di sé la McLaren 650S e una Ferrari 458, oltre a un paio di TVR Tuscan e una Porsche 918 Spyder.
Tutto è iniziato con circa 100 vetture nel 2012 e 2.000 visitatori. Quest’anno Supercar Sunday è arrivato ad essere il più grande spettacolo automobilistico italiano nel Bedfordshire, con circa 250 vetture sportive e 3.000 visitatori.

Bedford’s Italian community puts on its best Sunday clothes

Just after WWII, the exodus of Italians abroad targeted Bedfordshire: the building and brickwork industry was as hungry for labour as the Italians were keen to escape post-war poverty. Many sent money home before being joined by their families as business improved; today’s large Italian community (over 20,000 families) has not forgotten its roots. Most Italians abroad buy Italian cars and/or cherish their tricolore classics. Yet there is only one venue organising classic and supercar events in the Bedfordshire area, the appropriately called Sharnbrook Hotel and Vesuvio restaurant.
The Super Car Sunday at Sharnbrook (a couple of miles out of Bedford, North of London) is the latest event: the first car show there (Bedfordshire Italian Car and Bike Day) was arranged in 2007 and proved a real success even though it was a small, intimate affair. By 2010, it had grown into a busy, well attended annual event; the following year, two more shows were added to the annual schedule as the SharnbrookHotel opened its grounds to all classic cars, modern cars and cars of interest.
The Super Car Sunday, however, is only three years’ old and has grown exponentially: from Lamborghinis to Maseratis, Ferraris and McLarens, the display area was a triumph of sculptured lines, quadruple exhausts, gleaming V8 and V12 engines (with the occasional V10).
Sharnbrook’s management is not averse to accepting entries from national dealers and specialists for extra oomph, and the latest Lamborghini Aventadors (a SuperVeloce and a Roadster) were parked at the entrance, greeting visitors. Between them, a Countach which is often featured in the UK press looked very regal, and a reminder of Lamborghini’s inimitable style.
An endless combination of bespoke paint, detailing and matching interiors dotted the hilly display next to the family entertainment area, mostly provided by new Huracánsand classic Diablos. The remaining space around the hotel and estate was dotted with McLaren 650Ss and an SLR, Ferrari 458s, and classics too; despite a strong bias for Italian supercars, there was still room for a few TVR Tuscans and a Porsche 918 Spyder.
It all started with some 100 cars back in 2012, and 2,000 visitors. This year’s Supercar Sunday is still the biggest Italian car show in Bedfordshire, so far, with some 250 sportscars and 3,000 visitors.
